Leaving Opatija, we head away from the Istrian peninsula and towards Zagreb, the landlocked, bustling capital of Croatia. After the refreshing sleepy riviera town, this is a visual shock back to big city life and all that comes with it.

Workers and residents alike rush along streets to take lunch or to run errands. The few market stalls outside the train station hold cherries, berries and more and the sun beats down on Tomislav Square.

Tram, Bus, Funicular – Hop on one of these for a view of the city. Crossing the streets, you have barely enough time before the lights change so save your head-in-the-clouds sightseeing for when you are on the sidewalk.

Sheraton Zagreb – we have one night only here. Arriving in the afternoon, we meet our guide who takes us on a walking tour of Gornji Grad (Upper Town) and Donji Grad (Lower Town).

Next Stop, Plitvice Lakes, Croatia.
